Traditional Colombian arepas being prepared on a rustic surface with simple ingredients

Arepas

What is an arepa?

An arepa is a traditional Colombian corn cake made from pre-cooked corn flour. It is warm, golden, lightly crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside.

Arepas can be enjoyed plain, topped, split and filled, or paired with almost anything — eggs, cheese, avocado, chicken, beans, turkey, or your family’s favorite ingredients.

Are arepas the same as tortillas?

No. Arepas and tortillas are very different in texture, thickness, and how they are served.

Tortillas are usually thin and flexible. Colombian arepas are thicker, softer inside, and more substantial.

They can be served plain, topped, split and filled, or used as a warm base for breakfast, snacks, lunchbox ideas, simple meals, and on-the-go family days.

Where do arepas come from?

Arepas trace their ancient origins back hundreds of years to the indigenous peoples of what is now Colombia and Venezuela. They were originally crafted as a daily bread, representing warmth, family, and simple nourishment.

I first discovered Colombian arepas through an animated film set in Colombia. Is this the real thing?

Yes — and we love that the film sparked your curiosity. What you saw was a glimpse into a tradition Colombian families have lived for generations.

Zavor & Co. arepas are made with simple ingredients and inspired by the same everyday Colombian tradition: warm arepas made to be shared, enjoyed, and served in countless ways.

What does a Zavor arepa taste like?

A Zavor arepa has a delicate corn and cheese flavor with a warm, toasted finish. It is lightly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and satisfying enough to enjoy on its own or pair with your favorite toppings and fillings.

Simple, Safe, and Honest

Are Zavor arepas really gluten-free?

Yes. Every Zavor & Co. arepa is made with naturally gluten-free ingredients and prepared in a dedicated gluten-free kitchen where no gluten products are processed.

We use gluten-free pre-cooked corn flour from a reputable international food brand, along with water, cheese, real butter, and salt.

Storage & Preparation

How do I heat the arepas?

Place your frozen arepa directly into the toaster on a high setting until warm and lightly golden. Repeat once or twice as needed until it is heated through and slightly crisp on the outside.

No thawing required.

How long do arepas last in the freezer?

For best quality, keep your arepas frozen in their original sealed packaging. They will stay fresh in the freezer for several months.

Can I put the arepas in the fridge instead of the freezer?

Yes. If you plan to enjoy them soon, you can move a pack to the refrigerator.

Refrigerated arepas should be enjoyed within 5 to 7 days. Once thawed, do not refreeze.

Can I heat the arepas in something other than a toaster?

Yes. The toaster gives the best result, but you can also warm arepas in an air fryer, oven, or skillet over medium heat.

Air fryer: 350–400°F for 5–10 minutes, until warm and lightly crisp.

Skillet: medium heat for about 5 minutes per side.

Microwave: not recommended because the arepa may become chewy. If needed, start with 30 seconds and continue in short intervals until warm.

Can I take arepas on the go?

Yes. Heat your arepa, add your favorite filling or topping, then wrap it in foil or parchment for busy family days, school pickup, errands, sports practices, or car rides.

For best quality and food safety, enjoy warm filled arepas within 2 hours, or pack them in an insulated container if you need to hold them longer.

What can I eat with arepas?

Arepas are incredibly versatile. You can enjoy them with eggs, cheese, butter, avocado, turkey, chicken, tuna salad, black beans, shredded beef, pizza toppings, cream cheese, smoked salmon, or roasted vegetables.

Top them, stuff them, wrap them, or serve them simple.
